WTF Is Dabbing?
Dabbing is a way of consuming cannabis concentrates by heating them until they turn into vapor instead of smoke. This is done through a dabbing rig. For those of you that haven’t seen dab rigs, they are quite similar to bongs and are often made of glass. This method of inhaling cannabis delivers an incredibly concentrated dose of whatever cannabinoid is most pronounced in your extract.
Whether you’re inhaling intoxicating THC or non-intoxicating CBD, this cannabinoid will go straight into your lungs and pass the blood-brain barrier within a few minutes at most, making dabbing extremely popular for experienced consumers and patients who
want a potent and fast-acting high. In a simpler explanation, think of flower as regular coffee. Now think of a dab as espresso. Same plant. Way more concentrated. Instead of grinding up flower, you’re using a tiny amount of cannabis concentrate that’s packed with cannabinoids and flavorful terpenes. Keyword: tiny. Seriously. If your first dab looks like you’re frosting a cupcake, you’ve already gone too far.
Why Is It Called a “Dab?”
Because you’re only supposed to use…
…a dab. That’s it.
Not a scoop.
Not a glob.
Not “whatever fits on the tool.” A beginner-sized dab should be about the size of a grain of rice. Your future self will thank you.
Why Do People Love Dabbing?
Three words: Flavor. Potency. Efficiency.
Cannabis concentrates preserve tons of terpenes, meaning every strain keeps its unique aroma and taste. Translation? Your dab might taste fruity.
Or gassy.
Or citrusy.
Or like someone turned an entire pine forest into vapor. Everyone’s palate is different—but one thing’s for sure: It’s a lot more flavorful than accidentally lighting the side of your bowl on fire.
Solventless Concentrates
Solventless concentrates are exactly what they sound like—they’re made without using chemical solvents like butane, propane, or alcohol. Instead, extractors rely on heat, pressure, and mechanical techniques to separate the cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant.
Because no chemical solvents are involved, many cannabis enthusiasts consider solventless extracts to be some of the cleanest and most natural concentrates available. There’s no concern about residual solvents, allowing the focus to stay on the plant’s natural flavors and terpene profile.
The tradeoff? Producing high-quality solventless concentrates is more labor-intensive and typically yields less product than solvent-based extraction methods. That extra time and craftsmanship often come with a higher price tag—but for consumers who value purity, flavor, and a premium cannabis experience, many believe it’s well worth it.
Solvent-Based Concentrates
Solvent-based concentrates are made by using chemical solvents—such as butane, propane, or ethanol—to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant. During the extraction process, the solvent separates the plant’s most desirable compounds, resulting in a highly potent cannabis concentrate.
One of the biggest advantages of solvent-based extraction is consistency. It allows manufacturers to create a wide variety of concentrate textures, including shatter, wax, badder, crumble, and live resin. Because these methods are efficient and easier to scale, solvent-based concentrates are often more affordable than their solventless counterparts.
You may have heard concerns about solvents being left behind in concentrates. The good news is that products sold through licensed dispensaries are required to undergo rigorous third-party laboratory testing. These tests verify that any residual solvents fall well within strict safety standards before the product ever reaches the shelf.
If you’re shopping at a licensed dispensary like Hikei, you can feel confident knowing the concentrates have been tested for potency, purity, and safety. Many brands even make their Certificates of Analysis (COAs) available, allowing you to review lab results—including residual solvent testing—for yourself.
Different Types Of Dabs
Live Resin
The flavor nerd. Made from fresh frozen cannabis to preserve the plant’s natural terpene profile. If concentrates had a sommelier, this would be their recommendation.
Live Rosin
The fancy one. No solvents. Just heat, pressure, and cannabis magic. It’s basically the “farm-to-table” version of concentrates.
Badder
Probably the easiest concentrate for beginners.
Soft.
Creamy.
Easy to scoop.
Sadly…
Not edible. Please don’t spread it on toast.
Shatter
Looks like stained glass. Breaks like stained glass. Definitely don’t confuse it with stained glass.
Diamonds
Tiny THC crystals that hit like they skipped leg day and only trained upper body.
Small?
Yes.
Powerful? Also yes. Respect the diamonds.
How Do You Take a Dab?
1. Heat the Nail
Light up the torch and heat the nail or banger until it glows red (about 20 – 30 seconds). Ensure the flame is directed away from the dab rig to avoid damage.
2. Let the Nail Cool
After heating, let the nail cool for 20 – 60 seconds, depending on the material of the nail and the desired temperature. Lower temperatures preserve flavor, while higher temperatures produce thicker vapor.
3. Apply the Concentrate
Scoop a small (emphasis, small!) amount of concentrate using the dab tool, something the size of half a grain of rice is a good way to get started. Gently apply it to the inside of the nail or banger while inhaling through the rig’s mouthpiece.
4. Cover with a Carb Cap (Optional)
This is the time to use the carb cap over the nail to trap heat and improve vaporization.
5. Inhale Slowly
As you apply the concentrate and cover it with the carb cap, inhale steadily through the mouthpiece. The concentrate will vaporize, and you’ll draw in the vapor.
6. Exhale and Enjoy
Exhale all that vapory goodness and enjoy the effects.
7. Clean the Nail
After each dab, clean the nail with a cotton swab while it’s still warm to remove any residue. This habit keeps your rig clean and ensures a better taste in the future.

Is Dabbing Better Than Smoking Flower?
That’s like asking if pizza is better than tacos.
Wrong question.
They’re just different.
Flower is perfect for relaxing, sharing with friends, or enjoying a classic smoke.
Dabs are ideal if you want stronger effects, incredible flavor, or you’re looking for a more concentrated cannabis experience.
Neither wins.
Except maybe pizza.
